Juniper School

SCHOOL HISTORY

The school was founded in 1960 by the Passionist Priests who saw the need to educate the children of American families who resided temporarily in Mexico and had no command of the Spanish language. The school was under the direction of the Benedictine Sisters from the time of its foundation until the year of 1968 when the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose, California, assumed administration of the school.

The first Dominican Sister to administer the school was Sister Mary Ellen Kelly who came from California to assume the principalship. Sister Carol Prutsos accompanied her as a teacher in the English program.

In its beginning the school population was comprised of mostly Americans. Today, the School community is mostly made up of Mexican families who want to give their children the best possible education in a Catholic environment of peace and Christian love, as well as a bi-cultural formation.

In 1968 the school had nine groups of pupils from Pre-First to Eight Grade. In 1980, Seventh and Eighth Grades were phased out and a Kindergarten building was constructed across the street to offer a pre-school education stressing mainly the English language. When the 4 and 5 year-old children completed Kindergarten, they continued the “Big School” into Pre-First, an introductory year of subjects taught in English before they entered First Grade. In 1995 the Kindergarten added a Pre-Kinder level for 3 year olds.

As of September 2002, our program is as follows: The Kindergarten (Pre-Kinder, Kinder and Pre-Primary) attend school half a day and all teaching is done in English. After Kindergarten, children move on to the “Big School” where they enter Pre-First, which is a year of intensive phonetical, grammatical and reading skills, taught exclusively in English and adheres to a full day schedule.

From First Grade on, the program is bi-curricular. The students follow the course of studies prescribed by the Mexican government´s Public Education Department (SEP). The other half day is dedicated to teaching the complete elementary program as it is taught in the United States. By the end of those ten years, our students have the formation to continue their studies either in Mexico or in the United States.
